Is Laser Therapy to Quit Smoking Safe?

By the NuLife Smoking Cessation Team · Reviewed by a certified smoking cessation specialist · Last updated November 2026

Short answer: Yes. Laser therapy to quit smoking is non-invasive and drug-free. It uses no needles, no medication and no nicotine, and most people feel nothing or a light tingling. A few health conditions mean it may not be recommended, which is why every NuLife program starts with an assessment.

Low-level laser applied to the ear during a NuLife quit smoking treatment

What the treatment is

NuLife combines traditional acupuncture technique with low-level laser therapy (photobiomodulation). The laser is applied to specific points on the ears, hands and face, which is why it’s also called laser acupuncture. It’s designed to help reduce cravings and withdrawal while your body adjusts to life without nicotine.

Why people ask if it’s safe

The word “laser” makes people picture surgery or burning. This is different. A low-level laser doesn’t cut, burn or heat the skin. It works at a low power level that you usually can’t feel, which is why it’s sometimes called a cold laser.

What it feels like

  • During treatment: most people feel nothing, or a light tingling where the laser is applied. There are no needles.
  • Afterwards: most people find it relaxing. You can drive and go back to your day.

The questions we hear most

After 18 years of phone calls, the same three questions come up again and again:

  • “Does it hurt?” No. Most people are surprised by how little they feel.
  • “Will I gain weight?” Some people get hungrier once nicotine is gone. We talk about it during counselling and build it into your plan.
  • “How much does it cost?” Every program is built around your habit, so we go over pricing on the free 15-minute call, once we know what you need.

What about side effects?

The treatment itself has no drug side effects, because there’s no drug. What you may feel while quitting is nicotine withdrawal, which happens with any quit method: irritability, restlessness, trouble sleeping or stronger cravings for a few days. The laser treatments and counselling are there to help reduce those cravings and get you through that stretch.

“We admit to having our moments of temptation, they still attack us, but we laugh at them now. The technician told us that this is not a magic wand. Well, I’m telling you, this is as close to one as you will ever get.”

— Steve & Susan A, NuLife patients

Who should check first

Laser therapy may not be recommended for some health conditions, including pregnancy, active cancer, epilepsy, or anyone going through chemotherapy or radiation. If you have a medical condition or take prescription medication, tell us during your assessment and check with your doctor. Your specialist reviews your health history before any treatment starts.

Is it safe alongside other quit methods?

Many patients come to us after trying patches, gum or prescription medication, and some are still using them. Laser therapy is drug-free, so it doesn’t interact with medication the way two drugs can. Tell us what you’re using during your assessment, and keep your doctor informed about any prescriptions. See how the methods compare in Laser vs. Patches, Champix and Hypnosis.
